Lots of tension between Ray and Gates. Gates is apparently late and Ray has to pick up a patient just as he's going off shift. He's not happy and tells Gates so. He also thinks Gates is not doing a good job, but Gates tells Ray he doesn't need to be micromanaged. The patient concerned was hurt when his windshield was speared by an icicle.

One of Morris's kids turns up - his "dad" won't let them celebrate Christmas so he wants to be with Morris, his "real" dad.

He tells Abby that after "Jasna [Danjiela] and the kids" died he needed to make a change and came to the US. His brother said he was a coward, running away. He says it's only recently that he's realised that he wasn't running from anything but to something. Then he says that he was running to her (Abby), and he'll never let anything take that away. She touches his face tenderly, he kisses her hand. Then she tells him he looks hot in antlers (how very Abby!).

Icicle guy Rufus is taken up to the OR. He makes Neela promise to send something to his estranged kids for Xmas if he doesn't make it. He gives her $40 for this. She tells him he'll be ok.

Dubenko is in a spiffy suit, ready to go off to celebrate Christmas with his sister. He gives Neela a bundle wrapped in surgical towel. He says he doesn't usually give presents. The gift is a pair of loops, the magnifying eyewear that surgeons use. Apparently they were the first pair, which he bought when he was a med student. Neela realises how thoughtful a gift it actually is.

"City of Mercy" refers to Mercy hospital, which has apparently "dumped" a destitute patient on the street. Sam and Ben deal with the patient (Leonore Simpkins) and contact Mercy about it.

Sam calls a Mercy administrator to come over to County - and tells her that Mercy must take the patient to her home town of Gary, almost two hours' away (Leonore wants a nice, slow drive). Otherwise, Sam says, she'll rat on Mercy's policy of not treating poor and destitute patients to the authorities.

-luka and abby make up. very sweet scene. he tells her that his brother thought he was a coward for moving away, thougth he was running away from something. luka says he wasnt running away from anything, he was running to to something- Abby.

I think City of Mercy is Mercy Hospital, am I right about this? Anyone? It seems to be implied in what I have.

Morris is the only attending on the floor. One of his kids (Melia) turns up, and calls him daddy. She's gone to see Morris because she doesn't like her stepdad because he said there's no such thing as Santa, and that Christmas is just so people can make money! So she's come to celebrate Christmas with her real dad. He dresses up as Santa for her (though in fact she later tells him that she's 9 and she does know Santa doesn't exist). There's another girl there called Greta and Morris Claus writes on her cast (having looked at her name bracelet on her wrist) and 'magically' knows her name. It's all very cute. I'm feeling all Christmassy already...

Morris almost accepts a date with Hope, but then doesn't, because he realises they might do something they regret... or something like that... It appears he has actually learnt something from bible study or whatever he was going to as well, he knows the punishments for the seven deadly sins. At the beginning he's at a study/prayer group with Hope.

There's a kidney transplant patient whose operation went well, Neela's with her. The whole thing is a kidney swap, where unsuitable donors/recipient pairs are matched with others who are suitable for each other, as it were... Neela wants to break some protocol and let one recipient see the donor and other recipient, I believe, though the transplant co-ordinator is reluctant - she says it's Christmas, so why not.

The homeless kids are back, with a new one called Ellie. Gates and Ray go with the other kids to find her (they couldn't get 'Mayday'). She's in labour; looks like we're gonna get a Christmas birth. The word manger is mentioned. Ray instructs Gates through the delivery (which is a little tricky), then they swap over as Ray is more experienced. Little bit of male bonding going on... Ellie has a boy, she doesn't know who the father of the baby is, one of various men who give them food etc for sleeping with her. Gates gets her to go to hospital to get checked over by saying that social services won't be called, but of course he's lying... this upsets the kids, and Ray isn't completely approving of Gates' tactics. The guy from social services is called Ken Balthazar (if anyone's interested, the names of the three Wise Men are reputed, in Western Christianity, to be Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar). He's going to try and keep them in a group home but there are no guarantees they won't end up fostered.

At the beginning of the eppy Luka + Abby are arguing about the Ames situation, it seems she's found out what happened. Luka's asking whether Abby's still mad at him... later he gives this speech about how after his family died he moved to the States - his brother thought he was a coward for doing so and how he was running away. However lately he's realised he wasn't escaping something but instead running towards something (ie Abby) and nothing's going to take that away from him. (or words to that effect, I had to paraphrase a bit... either way, it's corny but they had better not cut it. Seriously.)

At the start Gates and Neela kiss out in the ambulance bay, Ray sees them. Gates is a bit late and Ray doesn't give him an easy time over it. The atmosphere in the trauma rooom is tense between them, Ray's criticising a lot. Obviously this is leading to the 'bonding' thing with the homeless girl.

The trauma patient has an icicle injury - he used to be on crystal meth and his family left him because of it. He needs an op but talks about how his kids haven't heard from him in too long, etc. He asks Neela to send them some money he has if he doesn't make it. Neela talks about her own family's Christmas (Punjabi food and silly hats). He survives the surgery, and it seems Neela has called his family. Little reunion.

Dubenko gives Neela a Christmas present, his first pair of surgical 'loops' (magnifying eye things).

Neela and Katey talk about Ray (she's got some plans that evening with him - Katey that is, not Neela). Then she's talking about someone else called Rob (can't really explain details on here). A nickname McCreamy is mentioned. (Get it? No? Really???).

Crenshaw is happy that it is Christmas! And praises Neela (even though she breaks protocol). Yay!

Mercy dumped a patient and County ended up with her - so Sam makes the hospital administrator from Mercy to get the hospital to pay for the patient to go visit her parents in Indiana.

Ben asks Sam out for a drink, but I think she refuses, citing that she has presents to wrap.

This is going to be a heartwarming Christmas episode where everything might turn out well in the end.

Hope and Morris, fresh from a bible study session, go through the day discussing turning vices into virtues. As Morris works to “correct” his own behavior, and even gives his biological daughter a lesson about the real meaning of Santa, Hope is increasingly impressed. She must give him a quick kiss and offer to get together for the evening, but Morris refuses. Privately he kicks himself for being a “good Christian” by resisting temptation to move the relationship forward too quickly.

Ray continues to be upset over the relationship between Neela and Gates, and rides Gates hard during a trauma. Later, however, Gates and Ray go to help that group of homeless children from “Reason to Believe” – one of the girls delivers a baby. Gates goes back on his promise to not call social services in order to get two of them to come to the hospital. But later, Ray crafts a solution that Gates must help in – in order to get all of the children together into a group home, rather than being separated into foster homes. That seems to create some sort of truce between them.

Crenshaw is actually happy with the season, and Dubenko gives her a gift – his first pair of surgical glasses.

Sam and Ben become involved with a homeless woman that another hospital released back to the streets. Seems the system has a rule against that, and Sam is able to get the other hospital to transport the woman back to her parent’s house, 2 hours away, in order to avoid the publicity over their “mistake.” Ben and Sam, who have not yet dated, seem to bond over the situation.

Later, however, Luka tries to explain himself, saying that he recently realized that, contrary to his brother’s view that he was running away from something in Croatia, Luka now believes he was running towards Abby. She silently and sweetly lets that stand for a beat, and then teases about how hot he looks in his Christmas antlers.

11/11 - Episode 13.12 - City of Mercy: This Christmas episode will not only feature the regular drunk Santa but also Rufus Taylor, a man in his 30s who looks rather old because of drug abuse. He is rushed in the ER after a car accident. The man asks the doctors to find his estranged children so he can see them before his surgery. Another patient will be 15-year-old Ellie, a street kid who is in labor. Sam gets infuriated when Lenore Simkins, an African American in her early 50s, is dumped on the streets by another Chicago hospital. Sam tries to reunite this woman with her elderly parents who leave hundred miles away. A woman receives a kidney transplant from an anonymous donor at the same time her husband is donating his kidney to another patient. A handsome and friendly doctor is thrilled when he meets Neela.

Morris appears to have a conscience and tells Hope he can't go out with her. Later he's quoting Bible scriptures to her after pondering what he had said earlier when at a Bible study.

The pregnant girl is Ellie, one of the homeless kids and is with the previous homeless kids (an earlier episode) who brought their friend with rabies to the ER thinking that Neela was an angel and could save their friend. Gates and Ray work together on this one. They go on a "house call" as they go with one of the kids to some place underground where a very sick Ellie is. It sounds like Ellie does sexual favors to some local men in return for food and shelter for Teller, Ruby, and the other homeless kids. This is very sad indeed. Gates and Ray work really well together to delivery the baby.

Morris plays Santa and is doing a super job. He is really on the mark in this one and even got me near tears as I read the sides. I think he must've had a visit from George Bailey's angel, Clarence, at some point! His biological daughter, Melia the 9-year-old, is with him at the hospital as he plays Santa. He's surprised when he first sees her. She's trying not to cry and calls him "Daddy" which really tugs at his heart strings. Ray calls her "another one of Morris' petri dish kids." Melia ran away because of her new step-dad. Morris immediately becomes protective papa bear and asks if the man did anything to hurt her. Turns out that mean step-dad told her that Santa wasn't real. Since he won't let them celebrate Christmas, she wants to spend Christmas with her "real dad."

Way to go, Sam! After a destitute patient from City of Mercy Hospital is dumped near County, Sam gets things rolling to rectify things. A social worker and ambulance arrives to pick up the patient and Sam cleans their clock. She says she's not going to give them another chance to dump the lady elsewhere, so to make things right they are going to take Lenore to Gary, Indiana to her family. Sam says that if she ever gets wind of this happening again (patient dumping in alleys and other places) that she'll call the press and cops to County so fast that she doesn't know whether the C of M folks will get fired or arrested first. Ben is standing at a distance and admiring Sam for sticking it to the jerks.

Crenshaw tells Neela Merry Christmas and that she's doing a very good job.

Morris is running the ER. He tells Ray he needs him to hang around. "I've got no Kovac, no Weaver, no Pratt."

Ben asks Sam if she's doing anything after work. She says "You mean besides taking my kid to see 'Return of the Evil Zombies?' " Maybe he can buy her a drink. She doesn't know; she's got presents to wrap.

Ray and Gates advocate for the homeless kids after they got them to come back to the hospital with them. They convinced Child Protective Services to arrange for them all to be together in a group home.

In the beginning of the eppy, the surgery department is having their Christmas party and Crenshaw is very jolly, a totally different person than what we've been seeing. He apparently loves Christmas and says it quite often.

Dubenko has to leave. He's going to have dinner with a lady that resides at an independent living facility in Evanston. He sees her fairly frequently.

Early in the eppy, Luka and Abby come out of the ER into the ambulance bay in mid-argument. She's apparently questioning his sanity for going to Ames' work place. Luka says the cops wouldn't do anything. Abby says "So you threatened to kill him and I'm the one who overreacted?" Luka says "You think I made it all up?"

Later apparently, Luka is in the break room pouring coffee when Abby comes in and goes to her locker. He asks if she's not mad at him anymore.

There's apparently another surgical resident who is hot and thinks Neela is quite the prize.

Luka opens up to Abby about losing his family and how he came to America. His brother was angry and called him a coward, accused him of running away. Luka says he realizes he wasn't running away, but running to something. "I was running to you. And I'll never let anything take this away." The direction says that he looks deeply moved, the mix of loving what you have and fearing you'll lose it. Abby touches his face "tenderly" and he kisses her hand. Then she says "Did I mention how hot you look in antlers?"

Turns out that Dubenko is going to visit his sister. He's got a gift for Neela. It's a pair of the magnifying eyewear that surgeons use. It's not only what I would imagine to be a fairly expensive gift, but very personal. It's the first pair that he ever bought. He got them when he was a med student.

FULL OF THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT--A homeless boy comes into the ER and convinces Gates (John Stamos) and Ray (Shane West) to help his friend in critical condtion. After treating the young victim, Gates goes againest his promise and calls child protective services. Curtis Ames (guest star Forest Whitaker) turns the tables on Dr. Kovac (Goran Visnjic) when he issues a restraining order against him. Dr. Dubenko (Leland Orser) gives Neela (Parminder Nagra) the opportunity to be a part of a very special holiday miracle. Meanwhile, with the holiday spirit in full effect, romances heat up the ER. Maura Tierney, Mehki Phifer, Linda Cardellini, Shane West and Scott Grimes also star.
