This is most likely episode 20.
Director: Steve Shill
Dates: 02/24-03/09

An officer and an Army chaplain come into the ER with some "very bad news for one of the doctors". There are also several roles for wounded and medics in Iraq.

The other major plot is about a father and two boys who are brought in to the ER, having all been beaten.

Remember Jane? Sparkless Lane? Lifeless Jane? Plain boring Jane? She is back and she is trying to convince Abby that women like Andrea Yates were acting on some primitive impulse, like the lions.

Abby finds the talk weird. Me too!!

Things are ugly in Iraq, sweethearts.

I don't like to quote, darlings, but in this case.... "the truck is blown to hell".

Pratt is back from Africa.

He finds that life is ugly this side of the pond too.

Clemente is in Psych.

Everybody is worried about Neela.

Ray tells her he knows things have been a little strange between them, but if she needs anything or want him to do anything for her he is there.

Neela is sort of out and says she was probably ordering some latte or watching Celebrity Poker when Gallant died.

Last time they talked was four days ago.

A chapelain and a captain arrives to tell Neela the bad news, sniff. She is in deep denial, don't want to talk about it, don't want to hear about it and goes back to work.

Morris and Sam cry.

Abby asks the captain about Galant's parents and he tells her that they will be notified, if Neela wants. They also give her (Abby) an envelope with informnations and say that it will take 7 to 10 days for Gallant's remains to get here.

Sweetheart, our Doctor Clemente is not in a really good place. He is around when the Army guy tells Neela Gallant's truck was blow away by a roadside bomb, but wants to know if it was friendly fire.

Jane is thinking about getting a tatoo.

The father and sons plot is too sad for words.

Gallant's last words are about Neela.

Abby tells Luka she is going to check on Neela at her apartment. He asks her to call him later, she says she will.

We see Gallant buy the farm in the teaser, he does indeed die a hero and is telling one of his buddies all about his wife as it happens.

Pratt looks to do a nice job with the abused kid who ended up killing his father.

Looks like Clemente has some sort of psychiatric breakdown, or, as Frank says, he's 'bought a one way ticket on the train to looneytown'. Sam sarcastically congratulates him on his sensitivity.

This is a very sad episode. This is after Pratt’s time in Darfur because at one point, he almost wishes he were back there because of the tragedy in front of him.

Gallant is indeed killed by an IED that hit the truck in which he was trying to save another man, but had failed. He was just about to tell another soldier more about his own life and wife.

A Captain Evans and Father Marris come to the ER to tell Neela. She insists she be told right there but, in a state of shock, can’t believe it, saying she can’t do this right now. The officers echo the same kind of words we’ve heard the doctors do when they have bad news but it seems perfunctory.

Morris, Abby, Ray and Sam talk with Captain Evans and get the information from him. Sam and Morris have been crying. As the Captain turns to leave, Clemente asks if it was friendly fire, but we don’t know what the Captain answers (but we do know the script says an IED). Later, Ray seeks Neela out, finds her on the roof, saying that despite their tension lately, he would want to help. But Neela is wondering if she knew the moment Gallant died.

Meanwhile, a man and his two sons come in: Abby handles the man, Pratt the first son and Luka and Sam the second. The police think it was a home invasion but finally the story comes out: the father was beating the boys, particularly the younger. The first son took a baseball bat and hit back at his father until he stopped moving. The father ultimately dies, the second son must stay in the hospital, and the first boy will be going to foster care. Pratt helps him accept his actions – that God will forgive him because he was protecting his little brother.

Meanwhile, Clemente has had some sort of breakdown; the last the spoilers have, Luka is watching him in another room talking with someone from psychiatry. Abby leaves to go to her place to check on Neela.

The spoilers are very short so I suspect there is lot of material that involves only the main characters.
