DeeDee http://www.erforums.com/forum

An elderly man brings in his very sick wife, who has a hopeless prognosis. The doctors are in conflict about what to do for her, but Dubenko decides to do everything they can, until the ICU attending puts a stop to it.

A "spectacularly beautiful" "supermodel" is excited about her date with Morris. (There's no celebrity being cast, so I think they're using the term loosely.)

Luka and Abby are shopping for baby things.

Neela and Gallant are looking at apartments, and Gallant is working at the VA hospital.

Ray's teenage ex is in the ER suffering from injuries from a beating.

Dr Clemente hasn't shown up for his shift and the only Attending available to help in the ER is Dr. Dubenko. Inez gives him the bullet on a whole bunch of cases and Ray needs help with a teenager (who he of course doesn't want to admit is his ex-underage penis pal) who doesn't want them to call the police on her abusive dad. Do the words bambi, headlights, in, ring a bell for poor ol' Dr. D, darlings?

It's an actual, real true storyline, conmplete with info about his past shared with Sam, and a lecture from wise old Dr. Pratt on how to be a better doctor. Cause a Chief of Surgery who shows more compassion for a patient's family than Pratt thinks he should is a bad, bad thing.

Dr. Dubenko's storyline is so sad but so good, you're all going to love it darlings. He feels so badly for a couple who have been married for 52 years. Sam says she's never been in a relationship that didn't have interruptions or incarcerations. Dr D. fills her in that the rumor he was married is true, but they never made it to their second anniversary.

Abby is all happy and excited and planning out how much baby stuff she can convince Luka to buy and how soon.

Neela is all happy and excited to be looking at a new place with new hubby Gallant, until he admits his heart is telling him he needs to be somewhere else, as in back Over There. I'm so scared for him now, he needs to just stay put with his lovely new wife, silly boy.

Morris is acting all mysterious all day, sending the volunteen on an errand to pick up his tux from the dry cleaners and driving his porsche to work. Then a beautiful African-American model shows up. Pratt tries to make time with her because he thinks he really is that pretty and that special, but she's looking looking for Archie. It's a blind date, darlings, how cute.

Pratt makes Morris confess to her that he has an extra nipple so she'll dump him. But Suprise! She claims she has a sixth toe on her foot and makes all sorts of weird flirty extra body part jokes with him and totally ignores Pratt, just like he deserves.

Doctor Pratt is having a busy day, first squabbling with Dr. Dubenko over how he handles a hopeless patient. Then his old school friend with a drinking problem is brought in by a cop who saw him have an accident and wants a blood test for DUI. First he convinces the cop to wait until he can send his volunteen, who just happens to be the man's son, out on an errand to keep it a secret from the boy, then he draws some of his own blood and switches the vials so the guy won't be charged. I see he took lesson from Abby on how to falsify medical tests and get away with it. His friend agrees to go in a program but I just have a crazy little feeling that it might not end as happily as Pratt hopes.

We open with it being morning and Weaver is limping heavily. She wants to talk to Neela who is treating a young patient who was evidently maced.

About twenty pages in we are in a Trauma room with Dubenko, Ray and Sam. Apparently Clemente is supposed to be on duty and he is nowhere to be found. For some reason this means Dubenko is the attending on board for the ER this morning. Ray makes a comment about Zoe, his former sexual companion who turned out to be 14, not wanting the cops called on her father. Dubenko suggests calling the social worker. Ray disagrees.

Inez sticks her head in and rattles off a bunch of heinous-sounding patients to Dubenko. As well as mentioning that the husband of the current trauma patient is there. Dubenko leaves the room to talk to Mr. Venema (the husband) but not before requesting that someone locate Clemente.

We get the back story on Mr. Venema’s wife, seems she is going to be the big patient of the week. She’s been in a coma-like state for three years after an aneurysm she suffered while in Italy. We find out that they have been married 52 years. Dubenko is touched by this and promises to “do everything we can” for her.

Back in the trauma room, Dubenko asks again about Clemente? Sam informs him that the attending is a no-show. Everyone looks to Dubenko and he is unsure of how to proceed. He finally decides to plug on through with treating the patient and wants to prep her for admittance to the ICU.

Act Two
Ray is in Exam Two with Zoe. A police woman enters to take a statement as some Polaroids. A social worker comes in after a few moments as well. Ray insists that he didn’t send for her. Social worker clarifies that Dubenko asked her to give Ray a hand. Ray doesn’t like this and replies with, “Dubenko is a surgical attending and belongs in the OR.”

Ray and the social worker step outside to the admit area for a talk. Ray doesn’t think a foster home is any safer for Zoe than where she is now. Ray insists he’s handling it. The police officer finishes with Zoe and tells Ray and the social worker that a squad car has been sent to pick up the abusive father.

Dubenko joins them at admit as asks for Clemente again, a bit less genial than normal. Jerry says that he called in sick. Albright’s left him urgent messages and there are x-rays for Mrs. Venema.

Ray wants to know why Dubenko had to sick social work on him. They bicker briefly before Inez comes up to Dubenko again, bearing more bad news about various patients. She calls him Dr. D. and he “looks at her as if she were the devil.”

Dubenko asks that Kovac be called and told he needs to come back to work. As he moves off with the X-rays, Inez continues after him and informs him that she thinks an old guy died in the Family Room.

We have a brief scene with Neela and Gallant. Apparently Gallant wants to visit a friend in the VA hospital and Neela wants to celebrate. She gives in and agrees to go meet the friend. Gallant seems distracted.

Back in Trauma Two Dubenko brings the X-rays into the room only to find the ICU attending in there. He’s described as a forty year old cherubic balding man. He’s surrounded by Pratt, Sam and Penny. Foster, the ICU attending, doesn’t want to admit Mrs. Venema. Pratt and Sam agree with this. Dubenko continues to insist until Foster points out that it’s a waste of resources. He orders Pratt to remove the central line and other prep work that was done. Dubenko intercedes and does it himself.

Jerry pokes his head in looking for Pratt. A cop has brought KJ’s father into the ER. The cop tells Pratt they need to draw blood for a Blood Alcohol Count, KJ’s father was pulled over for a DUI where he almost ran over a traffic cop. Pratt wants Inez to put the cop and the father in the suture room so that KJ doesn’t see his father in hand cuffs.

While Looking for KJ, Pratt runs into Morris and we find out that Morris has a Porsce that he has had KJ wash and wax for him. Morris also mentions something about talking to Pratt about a date.

We cut to: Kovac's Apartament-Kitchen
Luka is pouring coffee for himself then joins Abby at the table where she is eating waffles and making a list. Luka inquires as to what she’s doing and Abby tells him that it’s a list of things she needs to do before the baby comes. As he looks over the list he comments about how big it is.

Abby insists there’s a lot to do, things to get and that the time will go by quickly. She wants to start looking for things now, comparison shopping she says. Luka asks if she wants to go shopping and she insists that she wants to go looking.

As she rattles off a list of items including car seats and cribs she tacks on “maybe a little mobile of famous Croatian diplomats.” Stage directions state that the pan off Kovac as he realizes that he’s having a baby with a crazy woman.

We cut back to Trauma One and the hallway
Dubenko is finishing up with his elderly patient and then has to break the news to her husband that she is not going to the ICU. His explanation does not go over well with Mr. Venema who realizes that it boils down to the all mighty dollar. He states that he wants to be alone with his wife and Sam joins Dubenko in the hallway.

Dubenko and Sam have a discussion about relationships, both commiserating that they can’t seem to have one that lasts. Sam thought that Dubenko had been married and he says that he was, but that they “never made it to our cotton anniversary.” Sam doesn’t understand what he means and he clarifies by listing the traditional anniversary gifts and she asks how he knows all of that, Dubenko shrugs.

Pratt walks up still on the search for KJ. Sam and Dubenko are no help. The cop who brought KJ’s father in spots Pratt and demands to know what the doctor is up to. He accuses Pratt of stalling so that the BAC falls before the blood draw is performed. Pratt explains about KJ being a volunteen and not wanting the boy to see his father in custody. The cop cuts Pratt some slack and lets him send KJ on an errand out of the hospital.

A couple of pages later we are in the VA Hospital with Neela and Gallant. They visit one of Gallant’s friends, Rogan, who is withdrawn, badly scared and wanting to go back to the conflict overseas. Gallant is affected by this greatly as he realizes that the broken man isn’t the same soldier that he served with.

Cut back to the Suture Room with Pratt, the cop and KJ’s father. Pratt draws the blood and then distracts the cop so that he can swap it with a vial of his own. The deception is noticed by Kj’s father and he and Pratt share a look.

In Exam Two we are back with Ray and Zoe. She has a pink cast now.

We skip a lot of pages and end up on Abby and Luka. He reluctantly helps Abby chase after her list as it blows down the street.

Back in the ER/Trauma Hallway Dubenko’s bad day continues. Sam and Inez are flooding him with charts, he can barely keep up. As they badger him, he asks them to at least prioritize the craziness. Inez tells him this isn’t crazy, they haven’t even had any traumas roll in.

Mr. Venema comes up to Dubenko and hands him an envelope. Sam offers to get Morris to handle some of the charts and Dubenko protests. Sam and Inez ignore him as he looks at the envelope. There’s a cashier’s check in it for a large sum of money.

Dubenko tells the old man that this wasn’t what he meant when he said County didn’t have the resources to treat his wife. Mr. Venema says it’s all he has, but if it’ll buy his wife four days in the ICU it’s worth it.

He and Dubenko discuss this further, Dubenko refusing and the other man begging, until he storms off angrily. Pratt approaches Dubenko with a chart and asks what the spat was about. Dubenko says it’s nothing and walks off.

The cop and KJ’s father approach Pratt and we learn that the BAC came back negative. The cop looks at Pratt suspiciously but can’t prove anything. As he walks off, KJ’s father thinks he is in the clear. Pratt informs him that he needs help, and had better join a program. They stop arguing as KJ appears, back from his errand.

Again we skip a few pages and see Ray with Zoe’s father, Mr. Butler. He wants to know where Zoe is and Ray plays ignorant claiming that Mr. Butler threatened him if he went near Zoe again. Asks why Zoe would come to County then offers to call the cops if her father is so concerned. Mr. Butler says that Ray doesn’t want police involved seeing as he’s a statutory rapist.

We cut to the VA Hospital where Neela is in the common area with a cup of coffee. She watches Gallant regale some men with a story from his time in the war. It involves filling inflatable sex dolls with helium and releasing them into the desert. Neela reminds Gallant they have to be somewhere at three to look at an apartment.

From there we cut to a Baby Supply Store.
Luka is playing with a stuffed elephant that squeaks while Abby is making him try on a baby carrier. He doesn’t seem amused and asks why Abby can’t be the one to try it on. She tells him to “Shut up and play with your elephant.”

He starts squeaking the toy right in her face repeatedly until they draw the attention of a sales lady. She asks if they are looking for a gift or if it’s for them. Abby says it’s for her, then corrects that it’s for them. “We’re having a baby—together.” She sounds awkward.

The sales lady asks if it’s their first and Abby and Luka share a meaningful look. Luka says that yes it is their first and Abby smiles.

Next they go shopping for maternity clothes, and when Abby expresses dismay at what she'll look like in maternity pants, Luka assures her that women are beautiful when they are pregnant. Later they return to the apartment in a giddy mood. They tease each other, laugh, kiss and one thing leads very audibly to another.
